School-based workshops
The benefits to your school staff of workshops
School staff suffer stress. And chronic stress is now associated with many health issues, including:
- high blood pressure
- gastrointestinal issues
- insomnia
- heart disease
- lowered immune function
- stomach ulcers
- lowered energy levels
With a background in education, I am very aware of this. Practicing mindfulness and meditation can go a long way to alleviating both stress and the related health problems.
And it also has many other benefits.
The benefits to your students
Many schools are now introducing some form of mindfulness and meditation into their school day. Studies are showing significant benefits, including students having:
- increased focus and concentration, resulting in more learning and better test results
- more feelings of calm and positive emotions
- more emotional regulation and impulse control
- better relationships with other students
- more resilience
- increased empathy and more acceptance of other students
- less bullying occurring
What we can offer you
Sydney Institute of Meditation can run the following sessions:
- Teacher professional development days. Workshops to educate staff for their own well-being and benefit. A short session is the perfect interlude and refresher in a day-long meeting. A longer session gives an in-depth understanding.
- Teach the teachers to pass on mindfulness and meditation to students.
- Workshops for students directly.
- For any number of staff or students or the whole school.
- Onsite or online
Since all that is required is a chair for each person, it can be done in almost any setting.
How does it work?
Simply choose what you would like included in your session from the list below. If unsure, we are happy to advise.
A session involves a combination of a guided practice and some of the science explaining it. (The amount of the science is at your discretion. Some people just prefer the practice.)
The guided practice incorporates up to 5 different types of mindfulness / meditation, so you experience a wide range.
A few of the science areas that can be covered are:
- What is meditation? What is mindfulness? How do we do it?
- The body’s response to stress and the physiology of what is happening in the brain and body. Why meditation is an antidote.
- How the practice of meditation improves focus, concentration and memory and therefore academic performance.
- Developing emotional regulation and impulse control.
- Emotional contagion and how it impacts the culture in a workplace
- The physiology of what is happening in the body when we meditate
- How meditation builds up resilience, self-acceptance, self-esteem and confidence.
- The negative bias of the brain, the science of optimism and pessimism, and consequently, how we can become more optimistic.
- How certain meditations can increase empathy and hence emotional intelligence.
- Happiness: What it is and the chemicals in the brain responsible for it. How and why we evolved to have these chemicals, and finally, how to produce them.
